Everyday material
Rubber band
A stretchy loop can hold things together or make movement and vibration visible.
Get to know it
Notice how a band changes length when pulled gently. Different widths, lengths, and materials respond differently. A loop stretched over an open cardboard box offers a way to investigate sound; a lightly stretched band may also fasten a temporary model. Do not treat an aged, cracked band as a dependable load-bearing part.
What happens if…
- Can the same band make different sounds?
- What does the band change when it touches the box?
